GI Tag to Manipur Black Rice (Chak-Hao)

Chinnaraja G. Naidu Deputy Registrar,Geographical Indications, confirmed that the GI tag had been given for the two products on Thursday.In this post we discuss only Manipur black rice and second one will discuss in another post.

Chak-Hao, which is a black rice variety of Manipur has bagged the Geographical Indication tag (GI Tag).


Chak-Hao is a scented glutinous rice which has been cultivation in Manipur
over the centuries is characterised by its special Aroma.

It is eaten during community feast and served as chak-hao kheer.

it is also used in traditional medical pharmaceutical.

it takes 40-45 minutes in cooking due to presence of Fibres bran layer and high crude fiber content.

The Application for chak-hao was filled by the Consortium of producers by the Department of Agriculture, Government of Manipur and eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing corporation limited (N.E.R.M.A.C.)

GI tag in India is governed by Geographical of Goods (Registration & Protection act),1999, it is issued by Geographical indication Registry , Chennai.

The Department for promotion of industry and internal trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, provides the GI tag in India.
