Project Tiger :- It is centrally sponsored scheme of the Ministry of the Environment forests and climate change providing Central Assistance to the tiger states for tiger conseevation in designated tiger reserve.
Project Tiger was launched in 1973 with 9 tiger reserves for conserving our national animal, the tiger. Currently, the Project Tiger coverage has increased to 50, spread out in 18 tiger range states.
The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA):-
It is a statuary body (It was given statutory status by 2006 amendment of Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.) of the ministry with an overarching supervisory coordination role performing function as provided in the Wildlife protection act, 1972.
The NTCA was launched in 2005 , following the recommendations of the Tiger Task force
The Authority will have eight experts or professionals having qualifications and experience in wildlife conservation and welfare of people including tribals, apart from three Members of Parliament of whom two will be elected by the House of the People and one by the Council of States.
The Inspector General of Forests, in charge of project Tiger, will be ex-officio Member Secretary.
Objective of the NTCA:
• Providing statutory authority to Project Tiger so that compliance of its directives become legal.
• Fostering accountability of Center-State in management of Tiger Reserves, by providing a basis for MoU with States within our federal structure.
• Providing for an oversight by Parliament.
• Addressing livelihood interests of local people in areas surrounding Tiger Reserves
As per the WLPA , every state Government has the authority to notify an area as a Tiger Reserve . However the tiger conservation plans sent by the state government need to be approval by NTCA first. Alternative Central Government via NTCA may advise the state government to forward a proposal for creation of tiger reserve.
